YTP Student Success Story

Yahya* is a new high school graduate who has spent the last two years in overdrive. Starting with a University of Washington (UW) facilitated Pre-Calculus class during his junior year to his recent acceptance into the UW, this young man’s commitment to his future is one to be admired. Last year, he easily spent over six hours a week at the tutoring center doggedly digging his way through the Pre-Calc assignments with the help of at least four different tutors. Later, he was hired by the Center Supervisor as an intern and was pivotal to the success of the Summer Learning Program, compiling over 70 hours in direct service helping younger tutees to develop comprehension skills and reading fluency. The beginning of his senior year was filled with SAT/ACT studying/testing, university applications, and personal statements, as well as the follow-up Calculus course. Yahya met with SHA’s College Navigator numerous times throughout the year to both develop and hone his plan to get into his dream school, UW. His determination and diligence paid off! The Center Supervisor met with the young man’s father recently, and the smile on the man’s face spoke volumes of the pride he felt for his son and his success.
