We are looking for group leaders who are interested in starting sandwich teams to help provide meals for community members staying at Nativity House Shelter, the Stability Site and the Family Housing Network Safe Parking Site.

This is a great project for volunteers who want to help offsite and for teams that have group members who are too young to serve onsite.

There are lots of ways to do something big by doing something small. A well-made sandwich might not change the world but it can absolutely change someone’s individual world and make a hard experience like homelessness a little less difficult.

How it works:

  • Groups are responsible for supplying their own ingredients and supplies.
  • Groups are welcome to make ANY type of tasty sandwich. PB&J is a popular choice. We do have guests who cannot eat meat and guests who cannot eat pork.
  • Plastic Ziploc style sandwich bags are the best way to package sandwiches.
  • Please label and date each sandwich and/or the container that they are delivered it.
  • Labeling helps guests avoid things that they are allergic to (example: peanuts or eggs) and anything that they might not be able to eat for faith reasons (example: pork).

How to get started:

If you are interested in becoming a sandwich group leader, please complete the online volunteer registration form or contact meganed@ccsww.org to request a hard copy of the form. If you prefer a hard copy, registration materials can be mailed to your address with a pre-stamped return envelope.

Basic Requirements

  • Group leaders must be at least 18 years old. Teens under 18 years old may serve as group co-leaders but cannot serve onsite at Nativity House Shelter or the Stability Site.
  • Group leaders must have and/or be willing to obtain a Washington State Food Handlers Permit and keep it up to date.
  • Group leaders must attend a volunteer orientation before they can start volunteering.
  • Group leaders are responsible for ensuring that their team is following basic food safety best practices.

If you want to make sandwiches but do not want to join the volunteer team, we will always gratefully accept sandwich donations provided that they are made following food safety best practices, labeled and dated. Please contact Megan so she can let staff know to expect a sandwich drop off.

If you have a group that would like to donate meals but does not want to do paperwork or serve onsite, please visit our Meal Train Calendar for the Family Housing Network Safe Parking Site.
