Do you love to cook, enjoy social interaction and want a volunteer opportunity with a lot of flexibility?
The Nativity House Kitchen, formerly known as the Hospitality Kitchen, is looking for volunteers with basic kitchen skills and a desire to help.
Kitchen hours generally align with set meal times. Most shifts range from 1-4 hours. Our earliest shift starts around 7 am and our latest shift ends around 7 pm. Volunteer shifts are offered 7-days a week and scheduling options are flexible.
Meal Times
- Breakfast @ 8:30 am
- Lunch @ 12 pm
- Dinner @ 5:30 pm
We are always grateful to have volunteer help 30 minutes – 1 hour before meal services start. Meals are served for 1 hour and cleanup generally takes 30-45 minutes after meals.
Scope & Scale:
Our kitchen serves 3 meals per day for the 167 guests staying at Nativity House Shelter. The kitchen team also prepares food deliveries for 2 additional Catholic Community Services sites which serve unhoused adults and families in Tacoma.
Responsibilities
- Assisting staff in preparing breakfast, lunch or dinner for shelter guests
- Helping unload & sort food donations
- Helping pack outbound morning food deliveries
- Greeting guests as they come through the cafeteria line & helping serve meals
- Restocking silverware & supplies needed on the food line
- Cleaning & sanitizing kitchen surfaces
- Assisting with kitchen cleanup throughout the shift & helping tidy up at the end
- Helping run dishes through the industrial dishwasher
- Taking out the trash at the end of the shift
Basic Requirements
- Kind, friendly & able to work with a diverse group of people
- Good sense of humor & flexibility to help where needed
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to serve onsite
- Volunteers must pass a background check (processed at no cost to volunteers)
- Volunteers working with food are required to wear food handlers gloves for food safety purposes. Supplies are provided.
- New volunteers will need to attend a volunteer orientation before they can start volunteering
